A minor in Drama supports all other majors. Drama coursework cultivates the following skills:

  • public speaking and communication
  • writing
  • critical thinking
  • team building
  • design aesthetics

With a minor in Drama you gain an understanding and practical knowledge of all the elements of theatre, and you acquire skills that businesses are looking for: creative thinking, collaborative work, time management, and the ability to speak publicly.

Students who minor in Drama are welcome to participate fully in the life of the department. Opportunities exist both onstage and behind the scenes, including in the costume shop, scene shop, and Box Office. The department provides numerous ways for students to gain practical experience and marketable skills. Additionally, all degree-seeking Drama students work as crew members on productions, serving in one of the following positions:

  • stage hand
  • costume assistant
  • light operator
  • sound operator
  • stage manager or assistant stage manager

Students minoring in Drama are also welcome to volunteer for crew assignments in order to enhance their learning experience.

Minor Requirements

The minor in Drama contains a total of six courses totaling 18 credit hours, as follows.

Three required core courses (9 cr total):

  • DR 101: Theatre I
  • DR 104: Theatre II
  • DR 206: Fundamentals of Acting

One course selected from the following (3 cr total):

  • DR 201: Survey in Theatre History
  • DR 202: Theatre Topics
  • DR 305: Theater Topics III

One course selected from the following (3 cr total):

  • DR 207: Intro to Design
  • DR 312: Directing
  • DR 565: Playwriting I

One elective course selected as follows (3 cr total):

  • Any course from the Drama catalog
  • Any course(s) from the Dance catalog*
  • MUPI 410 (3 cr) or MUPI 410A (1 cr x 3 semesters for a total of 3 cr): Private Voice Lessons*

* Note that you need a total of 3 credit hours, not necessarily one class, to fulfill this requirement. Most Dance courses are 1 cr. Voice lessons can be taken at 3 cr (1 60-minute lesson per week) or 1 credit (1 30-minute lesson per week).
